Sergio holds an MSc in Electronic Engineering (with highest honors, 110/110 cum laude) from the University of Brescia, obtained in 2000, following his scientific high school diploma (60/60) in 1994. From 2000 to May 2003, he worked as a software analyst in the R&D division of Siemens Mobile Communications. He then pursued a PhD in Information Engineering at the University of Brescia, earning his degree in March 2007. From March 2005 to November 2019, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia, specializing in Telecommunications, with particular focus on Digital Signal Processing, Medical Images, and Machine Learning methods for Video Content Analysis. During this time, he contributed to numerous national and international research projects, taking on roles such as project leader and work package leader. Throughout his academic and industrial career, Sergio has undertaken several international research stays, including at Siemens Mobile Communications (Ulm and Munich, Germany), Queen Mary University of London (UK), British Telecom Research (Ipswich, UK), and the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences (Belgrade, Serbia). As of February 2025, he is also an Affiliate Member at the Creative Computing Institute, University of the Arts London (UK), collaborating on a funded research project. In March 2012, he co-founded Yonder s.r.l., an academic spin-off focused on Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence, where he serves as Chief Scientific Officer. Since December 2019, he has been an Associate Professor in Telecommunications (Scientific-Disciplinary Sector: GSD 09/IINF-03). He is married since 2010 and is the father of two children, born in 2011 and 2013.
Sergio's scientific interests are in digital signal processing, multimedia content analysis, with a specific focus on techniques for indexing audiovisual document. Recently his main interests are directed towards the emotional characterization of cinematic content, - the cross-road of computer vision, neuroscience, and media psychology -, and the processing of biomedical images and data. With the spinoff Yonder s.r.l., Sergio works on topics related to Natural Language Processing, Cognitive Computing and Machine Learning. On all these themes he has now published more than 70 research products distributed on international journals, conferences, and patents.
